Mixed media and three dimensional erotic works by Lee

Mixed media and three dimensional erotic works by Lee

This artist goes by just “Lee”.  She is a native of Philadelphia and mostly known for her sculpture pieces.  Lee has developed a new medium to exhibit for this show.  It is a combination of cement and polymer allowing the artist to take relief sculpture to new heights.  Proficient in almost all mediums, this show has a little of everything.  Mediums used range from charcoal sketches, pastels, plaster, cement on wood, and cement on glass.  The artist tries to capture feeling and motion as well as the beauty of the human body.  Lee has been a part of the “Art loop” in Wilmington Delaware and has shown in local Philadelphia Galleries.  The artist has received awards for Best of Show and Three Dimensional Designs.  Passionate is the best way to describe this artist.  She creates because it is a part of her being and existence.

New works by David Aronson

New works by David Aronson

NEW Aphrodite Gallery at the PASSIONAL SEXPLORATORIUM, 620 S. 5th St. in Philadelphia.

David Aronson lives and works in the Philadelphia area. His quirky, offbeat drawings, paintings and illustration combine traditional media such as watercolor, ink, graphite and colored pencil with digital media and digital collage. His work ranges from whimsical to fantastic, from highly stylized to realistically rendered, and has been called unique and highly imaginative. It mixes lowbrow with fine art elements and often employs unusual juxtapositions. Thematically, David often delves into the realms of mythology and psychology. He has created art for CD covers, music posters and tour t-shirts. David is also an oil painter and has completed several public and private commissions. His digital animation has been featured on MTV2 and Fuse and his drawings were featured regularly in BigNews, the New York journal of art and literature, as well as being exhibited nationally in galleries and museum shows. He is an art teacher, working with both children and adults and teaching several different media, and was once the sole owner and operator of a small art school in the Philadelphia suburbs. He is also a certified hypnotherapist and a published poet.

Artist’s Statement
Short version: My art is about what I think and feel and it’s brutally honest. It’s honest because I want you to know who I really am. It’s about the stuff that’s swimming around in my subconscious. It’s about the stuff that scared me and made me angry when I was a kid; stuff that I couldn’t talk about then. It’s symbolic because symbols are powerful and interesting and people can see a lot more of themselves in a symbol than in something that’s literally spelled out. It’s fun and interesting when people can find their own meanings in my art based on who they are as individuals. Sometimes I don’t really know what my art’s about–at least not consciously. It’s dark and disturbing because there are things that need to be talked about and not swept under the rug. It’s humorous and whimsical, because life is so strange and outrageous that you need to have a sense of humor to survive sometimes. It’s about using your imagination. The artist sees beyond his everyday world and the limitations he’s been taught and he invites you to join him.

Long version: My artistic voice and vision has revealed itself over a long process of evolution, both personal and aesthetic, rather than having been a conscious starting point. The first intention is to allow the subconscious mind, the deeper hidden portions of the psyche, to express itself, much in the manner of the original surrealists. These images can range from whimsical to absurd to perverse to terrifying. I do not censor them and I often don’t know what they mean consciously while creating them. The second intention would be healing. Psychic wholeness is achieved by allowing the “dark” elements of my psyche to move into the conscious light of day. By depicting these disowned aspects of self, I accept them and integrate them, thus bringing about wholeness and releasing trapped energy and power. These images are often quite powerful because they speak in the symbolic language of the deep psyche-the language of dream and myth.

SEPTEMBER 14 Meet the artist at the free SEX ON THE RE-BOUND reception from 7-9PM in the Aphrodite Gallery at PASSIONAL, 704 S. 5th St. Philadlehpia, PA
Gallery hours 2-6PM Sundays

Aphrodite Gallery at PASSIONAL is proud to present Sex on the Re-bound, a month long exhibit of high-fashion purses meticulously handcrafted from the hard-covers of classic erotic books by artist Caitlin Phillips.

Caitlin has dedicated herself to the rescue and transformation of all unwanted literature. Most of the books that come her way are otherwise unwanted, often gleaned from library sales, thrift stores and trash bins. However Ms. Phillips also creates custom pieces from clients’ personal selections by commission. She has been collecting and contemplating the erotic-themed pieces for this collection in earnest for the past six months, with results to stimulate the mind, the body and any number of femme fashion aesthetics.

After a careful selection of unique fabric and handles, each book cover is reborn as a beautiful one-of-a-kind handbag, combining fashion with an appreciation for the literary.

Caitlin is best known for her instantly recognizable “bookpurses”, handcrafted purses made from old hardback books each of which begins with a hardback book.

A Washington, D.C. native Ms. Phillips also meticulously chops up old romance novels that she shellacs and turns into her “Naughty Bits” lapel pins, available at Philadelphia’s PASSIONAL Boutique. Caitlin’s brand, Rebound Designs has become a familiar staple of the historic Eastern Market on DC’s Capitol Hill, and Caitlin’s purses and Naughty Bits pins are sold through a combination of on-site sales, retail stores and online storefronts. All of her work is made in her live/work studio in the Mount Rainier Artist Lofts in Maryland.

Caitlin’s purses have been featured in the Washington Post, the Sierra Club Magazine, multiple blogs, as well the HGTV’s show “Crafters Coast to Coast”. Celebrity clients of Rebound Designs include Dr. Ruth Westheimer

Bondage Furniture by Blaine
Aphrodite Gallery August 2007
Gallery hours 2-6PM Sundays

My sexuality is inspired by a lifetime of watching fairy tale movies, and a profound enjoyment of the fetish scene. I’m inspired by the passionate side of BDSM. My furniture allows for the control and restriction of a submissive, however, it has a comforting feel.

I see beauty and artistic expression in many things, whether its rope work done by Midori or the first scene of a (novice) couple.
